The Church Left Them
Imagine being told by the very place that was supposed to love you unconditionally that who you are is wrong. That your identity — the way God made you — is a sin. That you have to choose between your faith and yourself.
That's the reality millions of LGBTQ+ Christians have lived. The church quoted scripture like a weapon. Slammed the door. Called it righteousness. And then acted confused when the pews started emptying.
But here's what the church doesn't want to admit: they didn't leave God. The church left them.
A new study just confirmed what many of us already knew — 76% of LGBTQ+ people who walked away from religion say they are still open to returning to faith. Three out of four. Still holding the door open. Still hoping someone on the other side finally lets them in.
That number says everything about their grace. And everything about the church's failure.
So here's the real question nobody in the pulpit wants to answer: Does the church even deserve them back? 👇🏾
Because the ones who do — the affirming congregations doing the hard, holy work of healing what religion broke — they're growing. People are hungry for faith that doesn't cost them their dignity.
The empty pews aren't a mystery. They're a receipt. 🏳️🌈🙏🏾
